About 3000 years ago, when the rock carvings were made, things looked quite different at Björksta church compared to today. Then the area was an archipelago landscape, and the images were carved into rocks near the shore. The motifs are often ships. Boats were used on a daily basis, they were by far the best means of transportation, but the images of ships also had a symbolic meaning; with the ships the journey went to the next world.
In total, there are six different sites to visit. At several of them there are walking paths between different carved rocks.
