On the top of Kyrkåsen in Enköping stands Vårfrukyrkan. It has done so for 900 years and is thus one of the oldest churches in Sweden. The 900th anniversary will be celebrated in 2025 because, according to tradition, the church was consecrated on Spring Day, March 25, 1125. At that time, it was the church of the dean of Fjädrundaland.
Like most churches, it has been rebuilt and added to on many different occasions. The paintings in the arches and on the walls inside the church were done in 1903-04 by Carl Wilhelm Pettersson, but you can see that medieval paintings were the main source of inspiration. Look a little extra at the masonry archers, which seem to support the arches. These occur from time to time in medieval churches.
