Elvis in the Beginning
Time
Saturday, November 7, at 7 p.m.
When Elvis walked into the small Sun Records studio in August 1953 to record a gift for his mother, he probably didn’t even know himself what he was about to do. But he caught the attention of Marion Kesker and Sam Phillips, and a year later, his first single, ”That’s Alright, Mama,” was released. It sparked quite a reaction, especially in the American South. However, it wouldn’t be until 1956 that his truly big breakthrough came with ”Heartbreak Hotel.” But what happened in the years between that groundbreaking first single on Sun Records and his major breakthrough on RCA Records? Did you know, for example, that “Heartbreak Hotel” wasn’t actually Elvis’s first number-one hit on the Billboard charts?
Join Kent Wennman and his Rockabilly Trio on a journey through Elvis’s early career. The first Sun Records singles, the first live shows, and the performances on the Louisiana Hayride. A show featuring storytelling and music in the classic Elvis & The Blue Moon Boys lineup—acoustic guitar, upright bass, and semi-acoustic guitar (and “a shakin’ leg,” as Elvis himself used to joke).
Kent is guided by his loyal companions Stefan ”Slappin” Steve” Persson and Ulf ”The Mighty Shadow” Holmberg. It will be an informative and lively exploration of the early Elvis, who even then had already established his musical vision—namely, to blend gospel, blues, and country in a way no one else had done before.
Have you heard the news? It's going to be a great night tonight...
