The Altuna stone stands right next to the church in Altuna<\/a> and is one of Sweden's most interesting rune stones. The stone is erected in memory of a father and brother who were burned, but it is the intriguing carvings that make the stone so special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the stone you see an illustration of the Viking Age story where the Norse god Thor fishes for J\u00f6rmungandr, the Midgard serpent. While Thor pulls in the snake he puts his foot through the bottom of the boat. The story was widely known in the Nordic world. Two hundred years later the legend was recorded by the Icelander Snorre in the Poetic Edda. Talk about a strong oral tradition!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above Thor there is a horse rider. Maybe it's the god Oden on Sleipner. The rider is the model for Fj\u00e4rdhundraland's logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
