These are two rune stones, which you can't get to by car, but why not take a bike or hiking tour? You'll find them on either side of a stream. In a sheep pen stands a tall, narrow stone with fancy carvings of Balle, and on the other side of the stream you can see a carving on a solid block of stone, made by Tidkume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bale's stone (U770) is 2.4 meters high and triangular in shape. It is a so-called mirror stone, i.e. it has the same motif on two sides. The two large rune horses are elegantly carved. The rune carver Balle was a master who lived in the late 11th century and was very productive, there are almost 50 rune stones preserved by him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text reads: Hedendis and \u00c4rndis erected the stone after Ofeg, their good father. Balle carved the stone. <\/em>Hedendis is encountered on another rune stone, which is carved a number of decades later. She lives in Brunnby a few miles north, and erects a stone (U1151) in memory of her husband Holmfast and her son Angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down by the stream, about fifty meters north of the bridge, there is the solid block with the Tidkume rune carving (U771). The granite boulder was not suitable for carving, but was nevertheless chosen for carving because of its convenient location, right on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text reads: Hallsten had the stone carved after ... his son. Tidkume carved this stone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get to the two stones, you either start in the village of Tjurs\u00e5ker and follow the tractor road down to the stream. Or you can start at Torstunav\u00e4gen, at the school bus stop in the hollow, pass some houses and come to a road barrier. Go past the barrier and continue. When the road makes a sharp 90-degree turn, continue on the tractor road at the edge of the pasture. You will pass another barrier and when the road makes an S-curve you will enter the paddock through a gate, and further into the next one through another gate. Be sure to close them after you! (Note that each gate also has a hook at the bottom.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
