A full-day course focusing on existential Socratic dialogues
Do you want to explore the mechanisms and possibilities of Socratic Dialogue? Do you want to get access to tools that bring conversations away from locked positions of opinion and towards joint creative explorations and new openings forward? This is an introductory course for those who are interested in actively participating in or leading philosophical conversations understood as existential Socratic dialogues.
We meet in groups to be inspired and gain new tools and insights with the help of Socratic conversation methodology. The approach means that we mix exercises with short lectures and input. We also do exercises that aim to engage our creative sides, our critical thinking sides, pay attention to the strengths and pitfalls of language to define, clarify and communicate.
Inspired by the methods and insights of classical philosophy, we create a toolbox for wisdom together for one day. The overall purpose of the day is for you to bring effective strategies to become wiser both in your work and your everyday life regardless of the contexts in which you operate.
As it is about practicing skills, the majority is devoted to practice, i.e. exercises in different formats. It is both easy and difficult to be in dialogue and the process is supported here by emphasizing the creative, unpretentious and playful. Through these joint thoughtful exploratory conversations, analytical skills, clarity of communication, co-creation, active listening and increased insight into key concepts are practiced. Although we will start from questions, the focus is not on the answers but on the process, being in dialog. With the tools of philosophy, we practice being philosophers ourselves, i.e. thinking outside the given and looking for the reasonable (or true), by thinking for ourselves and building on the ideas of others. Themes explored include identity, dialog and knowledge.
The conversations are existential because we explore themes central to our existence, and we do so through tools and processes that affect our way of being in the world. The conversations are Socratic because we use a dialectical method, where through dialog we trigger our intuitions and help to generate new ideas whose trajectory of thought we try to follow backwards and forwards, i.e. examine its assumptions and consequences and develop. It is a process that involves association, deconstruction and reconstruction.
